Now it’s various 737's and 32x’s. Photo taken from the DFW Skylink where MD80's used to be common. Only saw 2 or 3 in all of Terminal C. A year ago the route I’m about to get on was MD80 only. Tonight it’s a brand new A321. They are nice enough, but I’ll miss the MD80's. Especially when you get a seat at the front furthest from the engines.

I get why they need to go, but I’m sad. Took a lot of rides in them. Great planes.

I somewhat the look of the DC-9, the shorter body often looks better to me, but I really enjoy the MD80s. Especially in American Airlines livery.

I’ll take a 737 over an MD-80 all day every day. Been on about 5 flights with the 80. Very bumpy every time....

According to AA’s fleet page, they still have Super 80s. Somewhere.

We still get a nightly American Airlines MD-83 & Delta MD-88 here in YYZ! We also get 6-10 Delta Boeing 717s a day.

I’ve humped in C-141s, KC-10s, and C-130s...in jump seats...through crap weather. Never as scary as an 80 to me.
F-40?! You mean a Camry wagon with blown shocks, right?

Yeah I don’t think I’d want to be on one for too long but they were perfect for 1-3 hour hauls.

They do. I was on an S80 (what AA calls the MD80s) on Sunday. But they are phasing them out.

I forgot those Delta 717's were still up there. The final evolution of the DC9! They should be abbot newer and last longer than AA’s MD80 fleet. As I recall AirTran used to have a bunch of 717's. I don’t know if they are still around.

AA is bringing back the silver livery at least on some planes as a promotional thing. Just saw it on a new A321 at DFW. Kinda ugly on a modern looking plane with winglets.

I believe that after Southwest acquired AirTran, they began selling all their 717s to Delta.

E190s for days, yo. 737s and 32xs too. The E190s are shockingly common.

You can always come to ATL, since DL is still flying them. I think they are determined to continue the NW tradition of asking the question: “When will DL retire the MD-80/B717?”

But that was my problem. Every single flight I had on a DC-9 or MD-8x I was all the way back.

Was that some sort of paint/coating or did they just polish the skin?

You’re right AA is filling some routes with E-series jets too. I was on one recently that I think was re-liveried from the US Airways merger.

I really wasn’t sure, so I looked into it... bare metal. Apparently it goes way back to C. R. Smith the executive in the 30's - 60's hating painted aircraft. Also, I was wrong about a retro-livery - they aren’t bringing back the old livery, they just haven’t finished painted all the planes yet. The new gray livery only started in 2013. I thought it was older. So there were some of the new A32X’s and 737's with the winglets put into service before they adopted the new livery - the one I saw yesterday will probably be painted soon. The PR reason for the new livery was that the 787 can’t be bare metal, because it is composite, so they wanted to unify everything gray. The more complex reason probably has to do with re-branding after coming out of bankruptcy.

I don’t need to fly on an MD-80 bad enough to have to go through ATL :P Actually the main reason I fly AA is that I live in San Antonio, so I can hop to DFW and then get pretty much anywhere from there. ATL isn’t really that bad, but the layout of DFW is so simple that I can practically navigate from terminal to terminal in my sleep now.

Pretty comfortable little planes. I don’t begrudge them thier popularity, at least from a passenger’s point of view. The double bubble fusealage and high ceiling really make it feel like a bigger plane inside. Quiet too, modern high-bypass geared turbines will do that though...
Haven’t ever talked with a pilot thats flown one...

The answer is never, as long as there are flights from ATL to little podunk factory towns or smaller Southern cities.
